Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician

As if the name itself wasn't interesting enough to listen, then maybe his music is just what you need to go out and buy his stuff (well, more like go on iTunes since it's all there). And it's funny. I've heard people say nothing goods comes out of Cincinnati. In fact, a college friend I made is often the pun of a Cincinnati joke whenever someone makes it, which they do to fluster her.

Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician, or just Fat Jon for short, is just as recognized as Nujabes. He is what most people know the other Samurai Champloo musician (granted there are four of them). He is also a member of 3 other groups; Five Deez, 3582, and Rebel Clique. A instrumentalist who, like J Dilla and others, sample tracks and adds his own beat. And he's good, really good. In fact, when I set up my Pandora stations he was one of the first names I put in.

John Marshall's music to me is a little more hip-hop than Nujabes. I can here the snares and drum-kits whereas, Nujabes clearly shows Jazz. But it's funny; put the two together and it's almost a seamless flow of music that makes you think it's one guy. That isn't to say his music can't stand alone, because it can. 7 plus albums on iTunes worth of music shows that. But what impresses me more is his ability to take weird soundbites and turn it into music, as on "Space Man".

In my last post I said Nujabes music made me think of my past like replaying something nostalgic. Fat Jon is like the soundtrack I want for my present; the music on the bus or train, as I take a Calculus exam, playing monopoly with my friends, even while I sleep. I mean, don't you feel that way.

Nujabes

If you are like me you heard of this guy, rather his music, from Samurai Champloo, an awesome samurai show about two guys and a girl looking of a samurai who smells of sunflowers. He along with Fat Jon, Tsutchie, and some other artist made the show exactly what we needed. Crazy nonsense with a little fun followed by a few deep episodes that wasn’t like all those other animes, especially since they weren’t tryin’ to save the world. In fact, the music added so many flavors to the show. I bet you stayed up all night waiting to watch this on Adult Swim; you know, when AS was cool.

So I guess you can understand why I’m archiving this.

Jun Seba’s (his real name) music was hip-hop bleached with Jazz from across the pond. As you can guess, Pop and hip-hop is big over there in Japan. Afterall, they got rappers too, and a lot of our American rappers and producer always say at some point in their career, "We gon go to Japan. they love us over there!" Examples include J Dilla, Nicolay, and Lupe Fiasco. But what's more than some guy bangin' Nujabes music down to block party, I can see his songs being played in some jazz lounge.

Each song he made; however, made me feel nostalgic about some point of my life. That guy I liked back in 7th grade, the friends I made, a time I got in real big trouble with my mom, going away for school, anything. Granted as I get older more memories will come (like my college graduation, if job, first child, growing old) and some of the song are best to listen to high (so says comments on YouTube) you feel relaxed and refreshed after a listen. I pull up his tracks every now and again, when I'm sad, angry, or uneasy. And when I can't go to sleep, Nujabes has music to help me do that. I actually dream when I listen to him.

People often rank him with J Dilla, Madlib, Fat Jon, 9th Wonder, and others. After listening to a few records you can understand why.

Hey

Hey

So if you’re reading this you just happened to stumble on to my blog. If the title caught your eye then great. So let’s cut to the chase.

This blog isn’t special. This is just a blog of different music I listen to and enjoy. My goal isn’t to start a revolution and change the world. I’m just making a blog to archive artist that aren’t know very much, or artist that people seem to forgot. I’m always looking online for their music and albums but can’t seem to find them. And when I do I always make a note of where to go but then something happens where I can’t find it again or it disappears. So this is that blog. I note the music, album, and where to go to find it. I'm just sharing what I like. If you like what you see then stay and comment. If not then keep on browsing by.

Enjoy
